Course Description

COMING FALL 2016

Music in every culture plays a pivotal role and has continued to do so throughout history.  We have grown up with music all around us, but no longer playing music as previous generations before us.  We played music at family gatherings, in religious circles, and had very robust music programs in schools.  For most this has been long gone and students are growing up without learning music.

MUSIC:play is a class where students learn to play contemporary instruments (piano, keyboard, guitar, bass, and drums) in a variety of styles and applications.  Students will learn how to accompany vocalists, how to improvise, foundations of grooves, and how to accurately analyze and play a variety of musical genres.

It’s been proven time and time again that learning music improves comprehension and retention, as well as students ability to process and excel in mathematics.  Music is proven to chemically change people, thus the practice of Music Therapy.  In MUSIC:play we will explore how to play music through our emotions and to convey particular emotions expressively.

WE ARE PROUD TO OFFER MUSIC:SINGMUSIC:CREATE, AND MUSIC:PLAY

AT THE REALM CHARTER SCHOOLS IN BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.

Because you have things like ‘American Idol’ and you have radio stations that play music made entirely by computers, it’s easy to forget that there are bands with actual people playing actual instruments THAT ROCK!
